The next morning Vivian awoke, startled by something in a dream she’d just had. The clock on her nightstand read 9:41. There wasn’t any food on the nightstand, so she figured the maid had already taken the breakfast tray away.

She pulled herself up into a sitting position and adjusted the pillows for comfort. She thought back to the dream, trying to remember what had jarred her awake. The feeling had been different than when she’d had the nightmares. She wrapped her arms around herself and closed her eyes, trying to picture whatever she last saw in her dream. It was the smell of jasmine. Her grandma always smelled of jasmine. The memory flooded back. This time she was having a good dream about her grandma.

In the dream, Vivian was being held in her grandma’s bosom again. The dream had been clear. Vivian had been elated to see her. Grandma Eva looked just the way she remembered her before she got sick—vibrant and glowing.

Vivian was excited. In rushed words she tried to catch her grandma up on the events of her life. She was proud to tell her grandma she had kept the promises she’d made to her before dying. She told her about all her degrees, work accomplishments, and the love of her life, Roland.

Her grandma smiled, encouraging Vivian to tell her more. Vivian talked about her feelings and confided the events of her most recent past. She’d even revealed to her grandma that she felt like her life was crashing down around her. She told her that she was a wealthy woman who could buy almost anything imaginable and that she had influence with people in high places. She told her how badly she felt about the wealth coming much too late. If she had been wealthy all those years ago, her grandma could have seen the best of doctors and not died of pneumonia.

She also told her grandma how bad she felt. Even though she had so much money, the money couldn’t buy the thing she wanted most in the world—to have her own child. She couldn’t buy back the years needed for her own eggs—time could not be tempted monetarily.

Grandma Eva took Vivian’s face into her hands and smiled. It was then that she finally spoke, telling Vivian, “I’m so proud of you for keeping all of your promises and making a name for yourself. Don’t cry. Be thankful for God’s love because it is more than sufficient.”

Then she told Vivian, “Have faith , God will take care of you, just like He did when you were a little girl.” Her grandma paused, looking lovingly into Vivian’s eyes. “Vivian, baby. I didn’t die because I didn’t have any money. I died because God wanted me to come home to Him.

“Make me another promise,” her grandma asked. “Promise me you will not let the troubles of this world depress you. Stop shedding all these tears over what can’t be done in your strength. Remember God is the source, not just a resource.
